Your Website Bio: Don’t Just Set It & Forget It
I’m not sure if this is one of the reasons I’m passionate about marketing or not, but I used to really enjoy watching infomercials when I was a kid. I dreamed of refinishing some furniture with QRB, and was entranced by the latest vacuum seal technology. My friends and I even shot our own video advertising Squirt Pudding to our Jr High classmates!
I can still hear Ron Popeil urging the studio audience to scream “SET it and FORGET it” each time he popped something into the Ronco Showtime Rotisserie. And while that is exactly how I prefer to cook (I’m a sous vide fanatic now), it’s not advice that should be rattling around your head when it comes to other areas of your life — especially when it comes to online marketing.
You should make a point to update (or at least review) your online bio at least twice a year to ensure you are putting your best face forward. And here’s why:
Nobody Cares What You Did Five Years Ago: Nothing is more awkward than meeting someone and asking them about something mentioned in their bio only to have them sheepishly admit they no longer work in that area/volunteer with that project/hold that position. Updating your bio means people know what you are doing right now, not what you were proud of five years ago. Keeping your bio updated ensures that potential clients and colleagues get an accurate representation of what you bring to the table.
Enhances Professional Credibility: An outdated bio can make you seem less engaged or even out of touch with current trends and developments. Regular updates signal that you are active and invested in your profession, which can enhance your credibility and reputation.
Sets You Apart from Competitors: In a competitive field like law, a well-crafted, up-to-date bio can differentiate you from your competitor. By clearly communicating your unique strengths and experience, you can attract clients who are specifically looking for what you have to offer.
But Wait… There’s More
Regularly updating your website and social media accounts can also improve your search engine rankings. Fresh content, including updated bios, helps search engines recognize that your site is active, which can lead to better visibility and more potential clients finding you online.
